Beware of Micro Cuts: How to Peel Properly Without Damaging Your Skin?
Peeling is an important part of your skin care routine. It is a basic application that prepares your skin for the next care step by removing dead skin cells, providing a brighter and smoother appearance. However, you should be careful about micro-cuts, especially if you use peeling products that contain particles.
What are Micro Incisions?
In physical (mechanical) peeling applications, granular creams and gels are applied to the skin, and dead cells are removed from the skin by rubbing. However, during peeling, hard-structured or sharp-edged particles rub against the surface, creating micro-tears on the epidermis, the uppermost layer of the skin, and disrupting the integrity of the skin. Although sensitive skin is more prone to this condition, all skin types are affected by this damage.
What Do Micro Cuts Do to Your Skin?
- It weakens the skin barrier. The skin, whose defenses are weakened, loses more moisture and loses its ability to protect against external factors. It causes a dry and dull appearance.
- It can cause inflammation and irritation. Mild inflammation caused by cuts causes redness and itching. During peeling, the skin becomes red and a burning sensation occurs. This becomes more noticeable in sensitive skin.
- Increases the risk of acne and infection. Small tears in the skin allow bacteria and other harmful substances to enter the skin. This can lead to acne and skin infections. Acne-prone skin is more affected by this risk.
- Long-term Sensitivity: Skin that is constantly exposed to micro cuts becomes more sensitive over time. Regular harsh peelings can cause permanent damage to the skin's structure.
How to Protect Your Skin from Micro Cuts
- Choose products that contain AHA/BHA. Instead of granular peels, you can choose to use chemical peels or enzyme-based products. Products that contain AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) or BHA (beta hydroxy acid) gently dissolve dead skin cells, purifying the skin and not causing micro cuts.
- Choose micro-structured particles. If you prefer physical peeling, pay attention to the structure of the particles. Peels containing micro powder or Polylactic Acid obtained from natural sources cleanse the skin without abrasion due to their round and gentle particles.
- Avoid coffee grounds and seeds. Coffee and seeds that have not undergone cosmetic processing and are ground in coffee grinders have a rough structure and are not suitable, especially on your thin face, as they can cause micro cuts.
How to apply correctly?
Apply the right peeling product to cleansed skin in small amounts and in circular motions for 30 seconds. Wash with warm water to remove the product and dead cells from your skin. Moisturizing with creams containing hyaluronic acid or ceramide will help keep the skin barrier moist and strong. You can determine the frequency of peeling according to your skin's needs. Please take care of yourself and your skin for a healthy and radiant look!
